Our boards and staff are experts in the areas of learning differences, evidence-based teaching strategies, and reinforcing the capability of teachers.

The Center for Literacy & Learning is the Louisiana Children’s Research Center for Development and Learning, or CDL. We specialize in the development and dissemination of leading-edge scientific research, knowledge, and best practices that improve teaching and increase student learning.

We advance public education reform by providing educators who teach our most at-risk children with professional learning that is specific and targeted to the needs of those students and their fellow teachers. With an in-the-trenches approach, we tackle real-time issues such as ways to remediate struggling readers, differentiate instruction for diverse learners, and build and sustain collective capacity.

Alice Thomas

FOUNDER, PRESIDENT, AND CEO

Alice Peale Pierce Thomas was the founder, president, and CEO of The Center for Literacy and Learning. Alice passed away quietly and peacefully on November 3, 2022. A core mission of social justice drove her strong belief that all children, regardless of how they look, where they come from, or how they learn, can and will achieve school success when provided with highly effective teachers and positive, supportive learning environments.

In founding and growing The Center, Alice changed the lives of countless tens of thousands by permanently changing the nature of education at a local, national, and international level – and by reforming the very way that teachers teach.

Our communities still have a lot of work to do, and every minute counts because every child counts. In spite of good intent, too many of our most at-risk children continue to be instructional casualties.

Solution

The Center for Literacy and Learning's services provide a crucial part of the solution.
The Center for Literacy and Learning is a Louisiana-based nonprofit organization that provides practical knowledge and strategies devised and delivered by teachers to assist in those critical classroom moments when teachers are faced with the reality of failing students. This is a crucial missing link in our city’s education renaissance.

We tackle real-time issues such as how to remediate struggling learners and ways to differentiate instruction for diverse learners in the classroom. Working side-by-side with both new and experienced teachers, the Center for Literacy and Learning professionals provide coaching and modeling in the classroom, as well as customized, interactive learning sessions.

Our Board of Trustees is comprised of a governing board of 15 elected or appointed to direct the policies of The Center for Literacy & Learning.

The Center for Literacy & Learning is directed by a volunteer Board of Trustees comprised of business, education, and civic leaders from around the city and country who share in our passion for ensuring that every child, no matter their background or level of learning, has an equal opportunity for a quality education.

We have spent more than two decades developing an international network of education professionals and collaborating with the world’s best minds to draft The Center’s programs. With their help, we’ve crafted initiatives using research-based best practices that deliver increased student achievement. Our Board of Trustees, Professional Advisory Board, Community Advisory Board and professional staff provide the organization with sound leadership and valuable resources.
