At The Center for Literacy and Learning, we work tirelessly across the state, collaborating with partners to address the literacy crisis head-on. For over 30 years, The Center has consistently pursued better education and literacy rights for students in Louisiana. It is our mission to improve student outcomes, provide training and support to educators, empower every family through at-home reading programs, and advocate for the best educational policies. But, we need your help to not only continue these efforts, but to increase our outreach.
Be a part of the change, your monthly donation helps provide books to kids. By gifting $10 a month, you are contributing to a better education for every student in Louisiana. Getting books into the hands of kids is a surefire way to help them reach their full literacy potential. Your gift also helps us to provide better resources, training, and support to educators, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education.
Only 28% of Louisiana 4th graders are reading proficiently.
NAEP 2022
Research shows that reading affects all other aspects of academic achievement and is a significant factor in health and quality of life outcomes.
Students who are not reading proficiently in third grade:
- Are four times more likely not to graduate high school
- Are six times more likely to drop out or fail to graduate from high school if they are black, brown, or Hispanic
- Are eight times more likely to drop out or fail to graduate from high school if they are a low-income minority
High school dropouts:
- Are not eligible for 90% of the jobs in the economy,
- Have yearly earnings that are less than 50% of someone who earns a Bachelor’s Degree, and
- Make up nearly 50% of all heads-of-households on welfare
You can have an impact!
Louisiana’s literacy crisis is one that we cannot afford to ignore. By donating, you’re investing in a child’s future, in a brighter tomorrow for Louisiana, and in a society where every child has the opportunity to learn to read proficiently.
I am fortunate beyond measure to have Mrs. Kelly Morris, The Center’s Literacy & Learning Specialist, K-12, as my Regional Literacy Specialist. As a result of her expertise and phenomenal support, I can honestly say that I have transformed into a stronger and better coach. Her guidance has empowered me to change the mindset of teachers, and as a result test scores have increased tremendously in our parish. Our entire focus has changed and we are taking a deep dive into data, analyzing the results, and using it to drive our instruction.
