What is your role with The Center and what are you most excited about?
My role is the Family Engagement Specialist, and I am most excited about working with schools and families across the state of Louisiana to make a positive impact on family engagement.
What is your background?
I am a native of New Orleans and have served as a certified educator for 25 years in New Orleans. I am a proud product of Orleans Parish Public Schools. I attended Southern University at New Orleans and received a B.A. in English Education. My post-graduate education continued at Xavier University, and I received an M.A. in Educational Leadership. As a lifelong learner, I have completed fellowships at Tulane University and the John Maxwell Leadership Distinguished Team for public speaking. My experience includes working as a five-year high school English teacher and becoming a principal. My proudest career experience was when I was charged with leading the first community-based school in New Orleans, which went on to receive several awards and accolades for the dedicated work in the community we served.
What is your favorite childhood book or literacy memory?
My favorite childhood books were the Ramona Book Series by Beverly Cleary. I just remember staying in my room all day reading on a Saturday while my mom did chores around the house and played music. I guess I remember it being relaxing.
Flashback to when you were ten years old; what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was ten years old, I wanted to become a rap artist. Hip Hop music was starting in the early 80’s and I was obsessed with the rap artists, the sound, outfits, breakdancing, and the overall vibe.
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
If I could be anywhere in the world right now, I would be in Ghana, West Africa to experience its rich cultural traditions.
What passion projects do you have outside of work?
Outside of work, I am an event planner and designer. I love making things look beautiful and putting smiles on people’s faces.
