What is your role with The Center and what are you most excited about?
I am a Regional Literacy Specialist with The Center. I have always had a passion for reading and often encouraged others to grab a good book. Now that I have the opportunity to collaborate and help others understand the benefits of reading has been a dream come true! I am most excited about supporting Literacy Coaches in schools across the state of Louisiana.
What is your background?
Like many others, I did not begin my career in education. I served in the United States Army Reserve for nine years, where I enjoyed my MOS as a Human Resource Specialist. I then decided to obtain my MBA in Human Resource Management.
After years of working in human resources, I decided to fulfill my dream of becoming a teacher. I entered LRCE’s alternative certification program to become a certified PreK-3 teacher. Best decision ever! I have been in education for the last 15 years, where I have worn many hats classroom teacher, mentor teacher, interventionist, and curriculum specialist.
Throughout my career in education, my goal was to improve the lives of children through literacy. Being a part of The Center is extremely rewarding because I’m surrounded by others who have chosen to invest their time in literacy.
What is your favorite childhood book or literacy memory?
My first-grade teacher sparked my love of reading when she read books by my favorite childhood author Judy Bloom to the entire class. My favorite book was Freckle Juice. My classmates and I thought this story was hilarious. We looked forward to our class read-aloud daily!
Flashback to when you were 10 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I have always wanted to be a teacher. I can remember playing school with my older sister and cousin in my bedroom. They didn’t take my rules and classwork very seriously and would often do things to make me upset. Looking back, I now realize they were helping me to build my classroom management skills!
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
If I could be anywhere in the world right now, I would be relaxing on a beautiful beach in the Bahamas.
What passion projects do you have outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy cooking and spending time with my family. My daughters enjoy finding new recipes to try, and I love every minute they work alongside me in the kitchen.
